COMMUNITIES under traditional authorities Ndamera, Nyachikadza and Chimombo in Nsanje have decried poor telecommunication network coverage in their areas.<\/p>\n
Member of Parliament for Nsanje South Constituency Thomson Kamangira said Malawian mobile networks can only be accessed in a few spots.<\/p>\n
The district borders Mozambique and is largely covered by one of that country\u2019s networks, Movitel. \u201cI have tried on my part to take the issue to Parliament.<\/p>\n
I am hoping that the network problem would be ironed out because the minister himself has visited and noticed the problem,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Minister of Information and Communication Technology Nicholas Dausi\u2014who addressed a development rally in the area on Saturday\u2014said once the Malawi National Fibre Optic Backbone project has been rolled out, it would iron out such problems.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe people have talked about connectivity problem as a major concern, which will be ironed out once the construction of the national fibre optic network is done.<\/p>\n
According to the contractor, it will only take a year to lay the cable.<\/p>\n
I also encourage the network providers in the country to coordinate and collaborate to make sure every corner of the country has full mobile network coverage,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Dausi said the fibre optic backbone project would also help Malawians living in rural areas to enjoy high-speed internet which for a long time has been limited to major cities.<\/p>\n
The $23 million project was awarded to Huawei and its launch is slated for this Wednesday.<\/p>\n
