I am very excited about it although there is still a lot of work to be done. The goodwill in all areas is there and to me that is what is key.

Golf Union of Malawi is working on building coaching capacity by sending golf coaches to Africa’s top most golf coaching learning centre – the Professional Golfers Association of South Africa Learning Centre – in Johannesburg, South Africa.

There is one, Noel Lipipa, who is known to many as a passionate football supporter and administrator because he is the current chairman of The People’s Team—I wonder which people these ones are because I am a proud Nomad—Big Bullets.

And hey Bullets fanatics, Lipipa may be your chairperson but I need you to know in confidence that he has more passion for golf than football, trust me!

Lipipa’s Lab Enterprises has taken the lead in the corporate world to sponsor professional golf activities by supporting Malawi’s best golfers to go to the qualifying school so that they are eligible to play professional golf.

Lipipa’s firm has pledged to fully sponsor Malawi’s only tour professional, Paul Chidale, who travelled to Harare, Zimbabwe last week for his maiden tour event appearance and is this week in Lusaka, Zambia for the Zambia Sugar Open. Noel, well out chief!

Just to spice it up, one of Malawi’s most improved golfers Patridge Shycal donated an air ticket for Chidale’s travel to Zimbabwe then Zambia.

Surely, on the sponsors’ side, it does not get better than this! Patridge is in Lusaka for the Zambia Sugar Open together with Malawi’s number one and two amateur golfers, Victor Kachepatsonga and Adam Sailesi, respectively.

Although not all expenses have been cover by him, it is still not a cheap venture. I salute you Sir Shycal!

Then we have the fans. I was flattered when I noted the large number of golfers who downloaded an app to monitor progress of Kachepatsonga and Sailesi during the qualifying rounds in Johannesburg over a month ago.

And recently, the website link of the Sunshine Tour Zimbabwe Open that gives the current state of affairs went viral all because lots were keen to monitor progress on our own professional, Chidale. That support is absolutely encouraging. Keep it up fellow golfers!

In closing, may I strongly recommend that we have five Lipipas, four Shycals and of course the support from golfers.

Fellow golfers, let me start by saying that golf is slowly becoming a profession in Malawi.
