The Central East African Railways (Cear) is embarking on a multimillion kwacha rehabilitation of Nkaya- Mchinji rail line that is about 399km long.<\/p>\n
Cear Communications and Corporate Image Manager Chisomo Mwamadi said the company is today until Wednesday sending out engineers and the contractors to inspect the line and submit tenders for the work.<\/p>\n
Mwamadi said the rehabilitation work\u2014estimated to last two years\u2014is one way of improving efficiency in the delivery of goods.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe works will include putting a new rail which weighs 40 kilogrammes on critical points, putting ballast stone, sleepers and repairing bridges. We are hoping to increase local traffic because people have wanted us to rehabilitate this line so that they can resume transporting with us; so, it is a big project for us,\u201d said Mwamadi.<\/p>\n
The rehabilitation of the line comes as the company is also rehabilitating the 96km long Limbe-Nkaya railway of which 62km has already been covered.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis will mean that the whole line from Limbe to Mchinji will be new, strong and reliable. This is an opportunity to local companies because they will be transporting their commodities in bulk with us and it will be delivered in time. We are trying as much as possible to invest in infrastructure for improved services,\u201d Mwamadi said.<\/p>\n
Apart from carrying cargo, Mwamadi also said the rehabilitation of the line would see the introduction of passenger coaches that would shorten the distance people cover when travelling by road between Blantyre and Lilongwe.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
