People from neighbouring Tanzania continue to come in conflict with the law in Malawi, as one Tanzanian national has been arrested in Mzuzu on theft allegations.<\/p>\n
The suspect was arrested on Friday night by police officers who were on patrol at Zigwagwa Market.<\/p>\n
Peter Mwakajumpha, 49, was found with five 50-kilogramme bags full of cow hides and four 20 kilogramme bags full of cables belonging to Malawi Telecommunications Limited (MTL).<\/p>\n
This is a second incident in the Nothern Region for people from the East African country to be found on the wrong side of the law, after eight others were recently convicted of trespassing at the Kayerekera Uranium Mine in Karonga.<\/p>\n
Deputy Public Relations Officer for Mzuzu Police Cecelia Mfune said that during interrogation, Mwakajumpha said he lawfully owns the hides and that he sells them to Indian businesspersons.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe said he brought the cow skins from his home country which he sells to some businesspeople who use them for various purposes, he however failed to explain how he obtained the MTL cables,\u201d Mfune said.<\/p>\n
Police also allege the suspect does not have proper travelling documents and that he is also being charged for illegal entry and stay in Malawi.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, investigations are underway and the suspect will appear before court to answer charges of being found in possession of property suspected to have been stolen contrary to Section 329 of the penal Code, and illegal stay which is contrary to the Immigration Act.<\/p>\n
He is from Kasumula Village, in the area of Traditional Authority Mwakasungula in Kiyera District of Tanzania.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
