{"id":44559,"date":"2017-04-17T11:50:50","date_gmt":"2017-04-17T09:50:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/?p=44559"},"modified":"2017-04-17T11:50:51","modified_gmt":"2017-04-17T09:50:51","slug":"charity-shield-fraud-thrives","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/index.php\/2017\/04\/17\/charity-shield-fraud-thrives\/","title":{"rendered":"Charity Shield fraud thrives"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Football Association of Malawi (Fam) may have instituted measures to beat ticket fraud at Saturday\u2019s Chifundo Charity Shield match between Nyasa Big Bullets and Kamuzu Barracks at Civo Stadium in Lilongwe, but this did not prevent the proliferation of fake tickets at the venue.<\/p>\n<p>Fraudsters still managed to produce counterfeit tickets despite Fam Commercial Director, Limbani Matola, earlier giving an assurance that tickets for the match had foolproof features.<\/p>\n<p>Police arrested two people at the stadium for selling the fake tickets.<\/p>\n<p>Confirming the incident, Lilongwe Police spokesperson, Kingsley Dandaula, identified the suspects as Peter Minofu, 30, and Weston Garnet, 32, both from Mulanje.<\/p>\n<p>According to Dandaula, the two\u2014 who reportedly reside in Bangwe Township, Blantyre\u2014were arrested after being spotted selling the tickets outside the stadium.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe two suspects will remain in custody pending further investigations,\u201d Dandaula said.<\/p>\n<p>Dandaula said the two suspects were found in possession of three booklets of match-day tickets and had already sold 13. They also had K14,300 cash.<\/p>\n<p>Fam General Secretary, Alfred Gunda, confirmed that he was aware of the incident, but said the association would not comment further because police investigations were underway.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs Fam, we did our best to protect the system and that is why it was possible to detect the fake tickets. It was not easy to tamper with the tickets because they had security features,\u201d Gunda said.<\/p>\n<p>Fam is yet to announce the gross revenue of the Chifundo Charity Shield match whose proceeds will be donated to Kachere Rehabilitation Centre in Blantyre.<\/p>\n<p>The association targeted about K15 million from the match.<\/p>\n<p>Bullets won their second consecutive Chifundo Charity Shield after thrashing KB 3-1 at Civo Stadium courtesy of Muhammad Sulumba\u2019s brace and Fischer Kondowe\u2019s header.<\/p>\n<p>Mustafa Salimu netted KB\u2019s consolation from the penalty spot.<\/p>\n<p>Bullets won the inaugural Chifundo Charity Shield match at the same venue last year after defeating Be Forward Wanderers 2-0.<\/p>\n<p>During the inaugural match, some fake tickets were also spotted at the same stadium\u2014a development that led to a blame game between the police and Fam.<\/p>\n<p>Some Fam and Central Region Football Association officials were implicated in the police preliminary report.<\/p>\n<p>Following the development, Fam set up a commission of inquiry whose findings are yet to be revealed.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Football Association of Malawi (Fam) may have instituted measures to beat ticket fraud at Saturday\u2019s Chifundo Charity Shield match between Nyasa Big Bullets and Kamuzu Barracks at Civo Stadium in Lilongwe, but this did not prevent the proliferation of fake tickets at the venue.
