The International Relations Committee of Parliament has said it is concerned with the low representation of trade attaches in foreign missions.<\/p>\n
Chairperson of the committee, Alex Major, has said his committee is not convinced that out of the 23 missions that Malawi has in different countries, only five missions represent the country on trade issues.<\/p>\n
Major raised the concern recently when his committee summoned the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Tourism at the National Assembly.<\/p>\n
Major said Parliament wants Malawi to be in the spotlight and be able to market and promote trade and tourism across the regions.<\/p>\n
\u201cAs a committee, we are very concerned because after looking at the documents, we found that out of the 23 missions that Malawi has, the country is only represented in five of them in terms of trade and tourism. That is why we invited the ministry responsible to find out why the situation is like that,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Major further said after discussing the issue with the Ministry of Trade, his committee noted that this is happening because of low funding and he said they would take up the matter with ministries of Finance and Foreign Affairs.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe want Malawi to be represented in all the 23 missions including Mozambique which is a major trading partner for Malawi,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
On his part, Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Trade, Cliff Chiunda, said the ministry is reviewing the reporting structure for trade attaches in different embassies.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are doing this so that the attaches should have a framework where they can report in terms of what they are doing in identifying markets for Malawian products as well as selling Malawi out there. We are also working together with our colleagues in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to make sure that we empower the attaches so that they should have the necessarily skills to identify markets for Malawi,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
