The Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Welfare has urged government departments and other stakeholders that directly deal with it to consolidate data management systems as a means of keeping track of people who need social assistance.<\/p>\n
Minister Jean Kalilani made the remarks on Friday in Liwonde when she visited a Youth Drop-in Centre as well as attending an open day which was supported by Youth Net and Counselling (Yoneco).<\/p>\n
Kalilani acknowledged that it is difficult for the government and its partners to support victims of domestic violence because there is inconclusive data on the location and extent of gender and domestic violence in the country.<\/p>\n
She then challenged officials from her ministry as well as civil society organisation that promote gender and children welfare to establish mechanisms that can help improve record keeping so that it becomes easy to plan and assist people.<\/p>\n
She observed that this can best be done at village level where chiefs can be empowered to keep records of people who are being victimised in their areas and are in need of assistance.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe cannot fight domestic violence if we are not aware of how many people are falling victim to the malpractice every day. For instance, we know that a lot of girls are becoming pregnant before the age of 18, but we are not conclusive on the reasons and their location. This is a big problem,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
Kalilani further challenged chiefs to lead in the fight against early marriages in order to give the girl-child a chance to go further with her education.<\/p>\n
Yoneco board member, Joseph Mshanga, explained that his organisation is facing serious challenges to change attitudes of people in rural areas to start reporting and avoiding gender-based violence and any other violence targeting young people and women.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe have a serious problem of dealing with gender-based violence and we need to make sure that we all work together to promote the interests of women and children,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
