He was one of those who were detained in the 1959 State of Emergency. He held several ministerial positions under Dr Hastings Kamuzu Banda including leader of Malawi Young Pioneers. He was in 1981 sentenced to 22 years imprisonment on suspicion he was plotting against Dr Banda. He was released in 1993. He joined United Democratic Front (UDF) but went back to Malawi Congress Party (MCP). In 1999, he stood for the presidency and lost. He formed the Republican Party. He died in 2016.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Chiona, Archbishop James <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>He was the first Malawian Catholic archbishop. He led the bishops in 1992 by issuing the Pastoral Letter which facilitated the downfall of the one-party system.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Chisiza, Dunduzu K <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>He was educated and obtained the Cambridge School Certificate in Uganda. He was appointed secretary general of the Nyasaland African Congress (NAC) and MCP. He was appointed deputy minister of Finance. He died in a car accident in August in 1962 shortly after holding the Nyasaland Economic symposium. He wrote a pamphlet Africa \u2013 <em>What Lies Ahead <\/em>in which he warned of impending dictatorships in Africa. He was from Karonga.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Chafulumira, English William <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>He was from Chikwawa. He is an author of <em>Banja Lathu <\/em>(our family), Mbiri ya a Mang\u2019anja, <em>Mkazi Wabwino <\/em>(good woman) and <em>Kadzitape <\/em>(traitor). He worked for the Northern Rhodesia and Nyasaland Publication Bureau in Lusaka. He was the first editor of the now defunct <em>Moni <\/em>magazine.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Chibambo, MQY (Qavaniso) <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>He was born in 1917. He was leading member of NAC. The government feared him more t h a n any other leader of NAC. He was sent to prison in 1953 because he was urging chiefs to follow example of Chief Gomani II. After release, he was exiled to Nsanje. In 1959 State of Emergency, he was sent to Southern Rhodesia. He served as minister of Works, regional Minister but ended up dying a forgotten hero.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Chibambo, Rose <\/strong>Loma thinda (1929-2016)<\/p>\n<p>She was a pioneer woman nationalist. Dr Banda appointed her chairperson of the Women\u2019s League of NAC and MCP. She successfully built the Women\u2019s League. She was first woman deputy minister. Prime Minister Dr Banda dismissed her together with several ministers who opposed his policies in 1964. She went into exile and came back in 1993. She no longer took an active part in politics.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Chipembere, Henry Masauko (1930-1975) <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>From Malindi, Mangochi, he graduated in history at Fort Hare College in South Africa. He served as district assistant before getting elected to the Legislative council in 1956. He was responsible for persuading Dr Banda to come back home to take up leadership of NAC. He was treasurer general of NAC. He was detained with Dr Banda in Gweru Prison, Zimbabwe. During the cabinet crisis of 1964, he resigned as minister of Education in sympathy with those who had been dismissed. From Mangochi, he led a militia to go and take over the government in Zomba. He was intercepted at Liwonde Barrage. He fled to Tanzania. Later, he went to the United States, earned a PhD and became a lecturer and died there in 1975.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Chirwa, Orton E.C <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>He was first Malawian lawyer and attorney general. He founded with Aleke Banda the MCP in 1959 while Dr Banda was in detention in Gweru Prison in Zimbabwe. During cabinet crisis, he was dismissed and he went to Tanzania where he formed a new party called Mafremo. In 1981, with his wife Vera and son Fumbani, he was kidnapped in Zambia, tried by national court and sentenced to death but the sentence was reprieved to life imprisonment. He died in prison in 1993. He was from Nkhata Bay.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Chinyama, James R.N <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>He was from Ntcheu. He was president general of NAC from 1950 to 1956. In 1952, he led NAC delegation to Britain to campaign against the federation. In 1956, he was elected member of Legislative council.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Gomani II of Ntcheu 1895-1954 <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>He was one of the greatest chiefs of colonial era. In 1953, he was deposed for implementing a resolution by NAC and Chiefs Union to engage in passive resistance if the federation was imposed. He was briefly imprisoned in Zomba and died in Blantyre in 1954 after he was prohibited from going back home.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sangala, James F <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>He was founder of NAC and its fourth president general before the return of Dr Banda. Sangala was the pillar of NAC. After attaining independence, the only reward he got for his patriotism was appointment as member of the Public Service Commission.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Matinga, Charles <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>He was a companion of Sangala in formative days of NAC. He was second president general of NAC. Later, he founded Nyasaland African Progressive Association and accepted the federation as fait accompli. He became a member of the federal Parliament and died in exile.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mumba Levi (1882-1945) <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>He was first president of NAC. He had been the most influential man through District Native Association. He was from Chidikalala Village near Ekwendeni, Mzimba.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mwase Samuel, Chief <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>He was from Kasungu. He was best educated chief leader of the Nyasaland Chiefs Union. He was delegate to Victoria Falls to oppose the federation. President Banda appointed him chairman of the National Traditional Court but later deposed him because at Mzuzu, he supported the plea by exiles like Matinga and Manoah Chirwa to be allowed to come back home<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Chakwamba, Gwanda He was born in 1934.
