Officers are transferred from one place to another depending on need. There is no connection with the fracas,” Kadadzera said.

Following the torching of the police vehicle, the M1 Road between Bunda Roundabout and St Johns Secondary School was closed for some hours as the police vehicle was still at the place of the incident.

Motorists going to Lilongwe, particularly its central business district, from the southern part, were using the city by-pass.

The M1 Road was, however, reopened after the destroyed vehicle was removed from the scene around 2 o’clock yesterday morning.

According to Lilongwe Police Spokesperson, Kingsley Dandaula, the murder of a 17-year-old motorcycle taxi operator, Masauko Makola, is what sparked the violence at Kaphiri.

Makola is said to have disappeared on Thursday after being hired by some people. His body was discovered in a well in the same area.

Dandaula said as of yesterday, 33 people had been arrested in connection with the fracas.

“More arrests may be made. The suspects are expected to answer charges of conduct likely to cause breach of peace and malicious damage. Our officers are on the scene to maintain peace,” Dandaula said.

The angry residents descended on Chitsime Police Unit, where they apparently heard the suspect in the murder was being held, but Dandaula maintained the police have not arrested any person in relation to the killing.

“We are still investigating the matter and we are appealing to the general public to provide us with information that may lead to the arrest of the people involved in the murder,” Dandaula said.

He added that the police are yet to recover the deceased’s motorcycle.

This is the second time in five months that people in Lilongwe have burnt a vehicle belonging to MPS.

In December last year, some irate residents of Mtsiriza Township burnt a vehicle for Lingadzi Police Station when the officers went to perform their duties in the area.

A day after violence erupted at Kaphiri in Lilongwe, the Malawi Police Service (MPS) has transferred Central Region Commissioner, Clifford Bandawe, to Police Training College in Zomba.
