British High Commissioner to Malawi Holly Tett has advised Malawi Defence Force (MDF) troops travelling to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) to preserve their good reputation when discharging their duties.<\/p>\n
She was speaking last week at Chikala Hills in Machinga during the closing ceremony of Malawi Battalion Pre-deployment Training for over 850 soldiers who are expected to be deployed to the DRC for peacekeeping mission.<\/p>\n
She said MDF soldiers are respected for their professionalism in peacekeeping missions.<\/p>\n
\u201cBased on the performance of the previous Malawi Battalion battle groups you have big shoes to fill. I am sure, however, that Malawi Battalion 5 will more than rise to the occasion. Many of you have served on UN missions and a great number of you have served in DRC. MDF have an exceptional reputation in DRC for getting stuck in and facing up to their responsibilities,\u201d she explained.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe training conducted over the last six weeks was not merely to teach you numerous sets of skills but it was also to demonstrate to you that you are a team filled with individuals who can rely on each other.\u201d<\/p>\n
The training was supported by American and British governments.<\/p>\n
During the six weeks at Malawi Armed Forces College and Chikala Hills the soldiers were trained by experts from Britain and USA.<\/p>\n
US Ambassador Virginia Palmer also commended the soldiers for their professional work in the past 10 years.<\/p>\n
\u201cMDF are extremely professional service and they have served with distinction in several peacekeeping missions over the last ten years,\u201d Palmer said.<\/p>\n
In his remarks, MDF Commander General Griffin Supuni Phiri also urged the soldiers to continue maintaining discipline.<\/p>\n
\u201cOur record has been very good since we started deploying soldiers to DRC and I want to encourage the soldiers to make sure they follow rules of engagement and making sure that we are there to protect and not to harass the civilians,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
