{"id":44102,"date":"2017-04-09T14:30:11","date_gmt":"2017-04-09T12:30:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/?p=44102"},"modified":"2017-04-09T14:30:13","modified_gmt":"2017-04-09T12:30:13","slug":"chief-kachindamoto-nominated-for-new-african-award","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/index.php\/2017\/04\/09\/chief-kachindamoto-nominated-for-new-african-award\/","title":{"rendered":"Chief Kachindamoto nominated for New African Award"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Senior Chief Kachindamoto has been nominated for New African Woman award and the winners in the various categories will be revealed on April 12 2017 in Dakar, Senegal.<\/p>\n<p>Nominated in the category New African Woman in Civil Society, Kachindamoto is competing against Francine Muyumba (DR Congo), Hadiza Usman (Nigeria), Salimata Lam (Mauritania), Theo Sowa (Ghana) and Zainab Bangura (Sierra Leone).<\/p>\n<p>Speaking in an interview on Friday, Kachindamoto said she was excited with the nomination because it recognises the work she has done.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have been successful in preventing child marriages and rescuing other girls already in marriages because of the interest shown by parents and the members of the community,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Kachindamoto said the harmonisation of laws that define the age of a child has helped in the campaign to protect girls from early marriages.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe were operating in the communities using by-laws but there were still some challenges. I am glad that it would be much easier now with the harmonization of relevant or conflicting sections of the existing legislation which will make it easier to advance our campaign,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, Chief Kachindamoto was credited for breaking up 850 child marriages in three years and banning sexual initiation of girls.<\/p>\n<p>Chosen in 12 categories, 68 influential women have made the final list which will now be adjudicated by a special panel of judges.<\/p>\n<p>Other nominees in various categories include new UN Deputy Secretary- General, Amina Mohammed, Somalia\u2019s first female presidential candidate Fadumo Dayib, Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and South Africa\u2019s former Public Protector Thuli Madonsela.<\/p>\n<p>Organised by the pan-African bi-monthly, New African Woman magazine, the awards celebrate and honour exceptional African women who have made a positive impact and contributions in their communities and the continent at large in the past 12 months.<\/p>\n<p>The first New African Woman Awards were held in London in March last year under the theme \u2018Changing the Game.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>The New African Woman Magazine was launched nine years ago and it highlights, shares and represents African women\u2019s issues, on the premise that women are an indispensable element in Africa\u2019s growth story.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Senior Chief Kachindamoto has been nominated for New African Woman award and the winners in the various categories will be revealed on April 12 2017 in Dakar, Senegal.
