Habit for Humanity Malawi \u2014 a not-for-profit Christian housing organisation\u2014 recently handed over seven new houses constructed for orphans and vulnerable families in Salima.<\/p>\n
Speaking during the handover ceremony, Habitat for Humanity Malawi Resource Development and Communications Coordinator Consolata Kambani said the organisation is committed to constructing decent houses for vulnerable people.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere is a huge need for housing in Malawi and Habitat for Humanity Malawi is assisting the government to address the housing issues. We currently construct 100 houses per year out of 21,000 houses needed to help Malawians and vulnerable families own a descent home,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
One of the beneficiaries in Salima, Felesiya Kazito, said she had been struggling to have a decent home for the better part of her life.<\/p>\n
\u201cFinally, I can sleep in a decent house for the first time in my life. Words would fail to express my happiness,\u201d Kazito said.<\/p>\n
On average, the organisation builds 20 to 30 houses in a year in Salima. Apart from Salima, the organisation has also built houses in Lilongwe, Blantyre, Mzuzu and other places in the country.<\/p>\n
In Malawi, poverty is prevalent and about four out of five families live in substandard homes with little hope of ever being able to afford a decent house.<\/p>\n
A typical village hut is built of adobe bricks with a mud floor and glass thatched roof, which requires frequent repairs.<\/p>\n
These conditions put the families at high risk of diseases as leaky roofs make the house damp and mud floors attract insects.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
