Southern Region Volleyball League (SRVL) teams heaved a sigh of relief last weekend when motor vehicle accessories dealers, Lube Masters, unveiled a K600,000 sponsorship of the league.<\/p>\n
The ceremony took place at The Malawi Polytechnic in Blantyre where games were played.<\/p>\n
The company\u2019s director, Gift Mkandawire, said the sponsorship was intended to revive volleyball in the region.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are here to provide something for the teams to fight for. Playing without sponsorship meant that the teams had no good reason to keep playing,\u201d Mkandawire explained.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are here to stay because we love the game. But discipline and commitment are of paramount importance in the running of the league.\u201d<\/p>\n
SRVL Chairperson, Pacharo Ngwira, pledged to run the league professionally.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe have every reason to jealously guard the sponsorship because we have suffered for too long. We need to prove to Lube Masters that we are a serious and competitive league,\u201d Ngwira said.<\/p>\n
He said matches will be played across the region to encourage institutions and individuals to form more teams.<\/p>\n
In the opening matches, Thunders beat Wild Cats 3-0 while Poly Troopers defeated College of Medicine by the same margin.<\/p>\n
Matches in men\u2019s and ladies\u2019 categories will be played side by side every weekend.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
