The deadline for registration and submission of annual reports of activities and financial statements of the nongovernmental organisations (NGOs) expired last Friday, March 31.<\/p>\n
The NGO Board asked all NGOs in the country to register and submit their reports in January this year and organisations which have not registered or submitted their reports risk being deregistered by the board.<\/p>\n
The board\u2019s Vice Chairperson, Maziko Matemba, said the NGO Act of 2001 empowers the board to deregister organisations which do not submit their annual reports.<\/p>\n
He said according to the Act, all NGOs must submit the reports by the end of the first quarter of every year.<\/p>\n
\u201cNongovernmental organisations are complementing government\u2019s efforts in the provision of key services such as health and education. Therefore, there is need for the government to monitor their activities,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Matemba said as champions of transparency and accountability, NGOs must lead by example by submitting their reports.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe work of NGOs needs absolute trust from the people they serve. They are in the forefront championing transparency and accountability from the government and they should lead by example,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Matemba also disclosed that the NGO Board and its stakeholders are formulating an NGO policy to regulate operations of all NGOs in the country.<\/p>\n
He said since the enactment of the NGO Act in 2001, the country has had no policy which he said is affecting coordination of NGOs.<\/p>\n
The board is expected to release names of the NGOs which have registered and submitted their reports in two weeks.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
