{"id":43607,"date":"2017-03-31T10:40:01","date_gmt":"2017-03-31T08:40:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/?p=43607"},"modified":"2017-03-31T10:40:03","modified_gmt":"2017-03-31T08:40:03","slug":"cear-moves-to-protect-rail-network","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/index.php\/2017\/03\/31\/cear-moves-to-protect-rail-network\/","title":{"rendered":"Cear moves to protect rail network"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Central East African Railways (Cear) will from next month embark on a project to secure rail lines passing through Blantyre.<\/p>\n<p>Cear plans to construct fences around its rail network following a rise in cases of vandalism and trespass.<\/p>\n<p>Cear Communications and Corporate Image Manager Chisomo Mwamadi has confirmed the development, saying the project will cost the company $260,000 and will run for three months.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe main aim is to keep away communities, especially around Mbayani. It is sad some people are using the rail to do their business, some are building structures close to the rail line while others are throwing garbage on the rail lines, which poses a threat to train movement,\u201d Mwamwadi said.<\/p>\n<p>He said the contractor, Pabe Construction Company, will use concrete blocks for the project and six crossings will be well-marked for pedestrians.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cConsultations with community leaders and communities themselves started in December last year so that people should keep away from the rail during construction. Funds permitting, we would also like to take the project in all critical areas along the whole network,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>On February 27 this year, a Cear train which was ferrying fuel from Mozambique to Limbe got involved in an accident at Makata Industrial Site in Blantyre where 240,000 litres of diesel was lost.<\/p>\n<p>The company is yet to release its report on what caused the accident and how much was lost.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Central East African Railways (Cear) will from next month embark on a project to secure rail lines passing through Blantyre.
