{"id":43586,"date":"2017-03-31T10:13:46","date_gmt":"2017-03-31T08:13:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/?p=43586"},"modified":"2017-03-31T10:13:47","modified_gmt":"2017-03-31T08:13:47","slug":"lbccap-holds-dissemination-conference","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/index.php\/2017\/03\/31\/lbccap-holds-dissemination-conference\/","title":{"rendered":"LBCCAP holds dissemination conference"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Norwegian Embassy First Secretary Jan-Erik Studsrod says the onus to avoid environmental degradation is on the country\u2019s people themselves.<\/p>\n<p>He said this during a day-long dissemination conference which was organised by Lake Chilwa Basin Climate Change Programme (LBCCAP) with funding from the Norwegian Government.<\/p>\n<p>The workshop was held in Zomba on Tuesday under the theme \u201cAddressing Climate Change by Building Social Ecological Resilience\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The function was attended by officials from Forestry, World Fish, Agriculture and Climate Change departments traditional leaders and local farmers among others.<\/p>\n<p>According to Studsrod, Malawi belongs to Malawians, hence the responsibility to take care of it relies in their hands.<\/p>\n<p>He advised people in the country to stop growing crops in mountains but in their gardens.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe cannot always depend upon any country to assist us to fight climate change because they may have other development commitments to serve their own countries, so this conference is an eye-opener for everyone here,\u201d Studsrod said.<\/p>\n<p>Chief Director in the Ministry of Natural Resources, Energy and Mining Yanira Mtupanyama, who was also guest of honour, urged the participants to feel free and express their views and share their expertise so that they can benefit when they go back home.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need more land but we cannot expand that land to the mountains. Therefore, the best way is to avoid cutting down trees wantonly because it causes soil erosion and at the same time promotes climate change impact,\u201d Mtupanyama said.<\/p>\n<p>She thanked Norwegian Embassy for the financial support to LCBCCAP that enabled them to organise the function.<\/p>\n<p>Leadership for Environment and Development (Lead) Chairperson Sosten Chiotha said they are working with communities in Phalombe, Machinga and Zomba where Lead teaches them the disadvantages of encroachment and cultivating along Lake Chilwa and catching fish unnecessary among others.<\/p>\n<p>Group Village Head Mkwate from Traditional Authority Malemia in the district said Lead has transformed his livelihood after following conservation farming.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Norwegian Embassy First Secretary Jan-Erik Studsrod says the onus to avoid environmental degradation is on the country\u2019s people themselves.
