Malawi Paralympic Committee (MPC) has embarked on an athletes\u2019 identification exercise ahead of the 2020 Paralympic Games in Tokyo, Japan.<\/p>\n
To kick-start the exercise, the association hosted a regional Para-athletics Tournament at Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre on Saturday.<\/p>\n
During the event, athletes competed in several categories based on the degree of their visual impairment.<\/p>\n
After the event, MPC Chairperson, James Chiutsi, said the trials were part of an exercise which they launched last November with funding from their mother body, International Paralympic Committee and the Malawi government.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe have identified 10 athletes in the Southern Region and we will move to other districts where we will get 30 athletes, who will also compete at the national level. We will then select the final 10 athletes to represent the country in Japan,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Chiutsi commended parents and guardians of persons with visual impairment for encouraging their wards to take part in the competition.<\/p>\n
The selected athletes include James Tchale, Ndadziona Barnet, Mphatso Kadzuwa and Blessings Jonas for the men\u2019s 200 metres category whereas Jennifer Winston, Bertha Nyson and Harriet Doviko will compete in the women\u2019s category.<\/p>\n
Chancy Moses will represent the men in 100 meters with Bridget Mbeta and Eunice Phiso completing the women\u2019s section of the same category.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
