Malawi which is currently ranked 133 out of 190 countries on the World Bank Doing Business Index, still hopes to penetrate through the top 100 ranking.<\/p>\n
Over the years, Malawi has been improving in the rankings.<\/p>\n
Minister of Industry and Trade, Joseph Mwanamvekha, said the priority remains for Malawi to be in the top 100.<\/p>\n
Mwanamvekha made the sentiments when he met donors and the private sector over a Doing Business meeting in Blantyre.<\/p>\n
\u201cAlthough the survey is not a perfect measure of the business environment, it provides a good estimate and has a bearing on investment decisions. As a country, we have been improving in our ranking. This means that there is still a lot of work to be done to reach our target of a top 100 ranking,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
He said it is important to focus on creating and sustaining a pro-business environment as a country.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe should aim at making the environment of doing business cheaper, easier and faster in Malawi. This can be done by reducing the regulatory burden and red-tape. This will free businesses to focus on what they do best \u2013 contribution to economic growth and creation of wealth,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Mwanamvekha urged the business community to commit themselves on improving the business environment in the country.<\/p>\n
He said it is important for the government and private sector to collaborate in improving the country\u2019s economy.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe way towards an investment-friendly, efficient and transparent business environment is full of obstacles, and it is often difficult for us to understand why things do not move as quickly as they should. To overcome those challenges, our full commitment and collaboration is crucial.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are partners in the economic development of our country and whatever we do, has a bearing on the general well-being of all Malawians. The rationale for seeking such closer cooperation and collaboration lies in the recognition of the inherent interdependence between the public and private sectors,\u201d Mwanamvekha said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
