The fifth national population and housing census is set to roll out in September next year, the National Statistical Office (NSO) has said.<\/p>\n
NSO Spokesperson, Maggie Kaleke, said preparations for the census are currently at an advanced stage.<\/p>\n
Kaleke said the census is part of the 2019 general elections.<\/p>\n
\u201cPreparations for the survey are at an advanced stage and we are currently demarcating areas where enumerators will be working in. We expect to have 200 wards,\u201d Kaleke said.<\/p>\n
She further said the census is an important tool to both the government and donor partners in determining resource allocation.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn addition to providing benchmark data on demographic and socio-economic characteristics of the Malawi population, censuses are unique sources of information for small geographical areas and sub-national groups. Such information is vital for planning and decision-making at lower levels of the country\u2019s administrative structures,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
The Malawi population currently stands at 17 million and is expected to more than double by 2050.<\/p>\n
The United Nations has projected the Malawi population to grow to 41.2 million by 2050, there by complicating the efforts by both the government and donor partners in providing adequate social-economic opportunities to Malawians.<\/p>\n
Last week, the Minister of Finance, Goodall Gondwe, said the country\u2019s overpopulation will have adverse bearing on economic development considering the meagre resources Malawi has.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
