{"id":43207,"date":"2017-03-26T11:03:28","date_gmt":"2017-03-26T09:03:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/?p=43207"},"modified":"2017-03-26T11:03:28","modified_gmt":"2017-03-26T09:03:28","slug":"ward-boundaries-key-to-elections-success-says-mec","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/index.php\/2017\/03\/26\/ward-boundaries-key-to-elections-success-says-mec\/","title":{"rendered":"Ward boundaries key to elections success says Mec"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>THE Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has said finding a solution to the issue of ward boundaries may contribute to the holding of successful elections in 2019.<\/p>\n<p>Mec Chairperson Justice Jane Ansah made the remarks during a consultative meeting on ward demarcations held in Mulanje on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>Those in attendance included traditional leaders, councillors, members of Parliament and electoral stakeholders.<\/p>\n<p>She said Mec has organised such meetings in order to reach out to every corner of the country in preparation for the elections.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSection 76 (2) of our constitution gives Mec powers to demarcate wards and constituencies and we noted that some councillors do not fully know their areas of work, a development that was fuelling wrangles [among councillors],\u201d Ansah said.<\/p>\n<p>She said Mec is focusing on the issue of ward boundaries, adding that demarcation of both wards and constituencies will be done in 2020 after the National Statistical Office conducts a national census to establish the country\u2019s population.<\/p>\n<p>Mulanje Council Chairperson Charles Kalata said the district has a number of unresolved ward boundary issues that need to be addressed.<\/p>\n<p>He requested Mec to seriously look into the border issue between the district and Luchenza Municipality, alleging that the latter is encroaching into the district.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>THE Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has said finding a solution to the issue of ward boundaries may contribute to the holding of successful elections in 2019.
