St John of God, through the Department of Child Development Centre, has drilled about 20 primary school teachers on special needs education in Mzuzu City.<\/p>\n
Speaking during a one-day workshop held at St John of God Hall, facilitator of the programme, Andrew Manda, said the training was organised to equip teachers with knowledge on how they can handle children with special needs. The teachers were drawn from different schools within Mzuzu City, including Katoto Primary School, Khokwe Primary School, Masasa Primary School, Ching\u2019ambo Primary School, and Nambo Full Primary School, just to mention a few.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe aim of the training was for teachers to interact with each other and share knowledge on how they can assist learners with diverse needs in their schools, so that these learners enjoy learning like any other child at school. It was also aimed at promoting education in the country,\u201d Manda said.<\/p>\n
According to Manda, many children with special needs face a lot of obstacles every day and are discriminated against by their teachers and fellow learners. This affects them academically and, as a result, they drop out of school.<\/p>\n
He added that the organisation will continue sensitising teachers and learners in surrounding communities so that people understand the importance of educating children with special needs in the country.<\/p>\n
Manda advised teachers to support children with special needs so that they complete their education, and fulfil their dreams.<\/p>\n
Katoto Primary School teacher, Esime Mamba, who was one of the participants, thanked the organisation for the workshop, saying she had learnt a lot and she would impart the knowledge on other teachers.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
