In short, the withdrawal of sponsorship by TNM.

Hayatou was a gentleman who wielded too much power and thought he was bigger than Goliath. But in a war you don’t underestimate your opponent.

Despite surviving the storm of corruption allegations, the Cameroonian Goliath was mercilessly knocked out by a little David from such a tiny island.

Hayatou’s policies were biased towards the Francophone states and had little regard for Anglophone states. Hayatou was more of a bully than a seasoned administrator.

It is my sincere hope that the coming in of Ahmad will improve football from all the spheres of the continent and that Caf Executive Committee will be well represented.

Anyway, when I was busy popping up my champagne bottle that the untouchable Goliath had fallen, news filtered in that TNM had pulled out Super League sponsorship.

After 10 years of marriage, TNM ended its romance with Super League of Malawi (Sulom) following a Competition and Fair Trade Commission (CFTC) ruling that the mobile service providers’ contract with Sulom had unfair clauses.

There have been efforts from stakeholders to seek clarity on the CFTC ruling but it has maintained its stance on the issue and therefore TNM decided to withdraw sponsorship of the Super League.

The commission faulted some clauses in the contract which restricted other mobile service providers from participating in the country’s elite league.

The withdrawal by TNM has left Sulom in total quandary and despair as the league was expected to kick off in two weeks’ time. This is one of the decisions that have left the football loving fraternity in gloom.

Having read all the arguments behind TNM’s withdrawal of sponsorship, I feel obliged to make a fair comment on the development.

As professionals, TNM should have given Sulom notice instead of pulling out when the league is about to kick off.

Considering the amount of money involved in sponsoring the league, it is practically impossible for Sulom to woo another sponsor in two weeks unless miracles happen.

There has been talk in the social media that there are numerous companies who can sponsor the league. We hope those companies will show up before the league kicks off.

Last week, I had gathered all my energy and strength to write about the deposed Confederation of African Football (Caf) president, Issa Hayatou, who fell from grace in an embarrassing fashion after losing to Ahmad Ahmad of Madagascar.
