Increased cases of corruption in the country\u2019s local councils are making the country\u2019s poverty reduction drive a futile adventure, Malawi Economic Justice Network (Mejn) has said.<\/p>\n
Mejn Executive Director, Dalitso Kubalasa, was reacting to the rising reports of corruption in the councils across the country.<\/p>\n
The media have been awash with reports of alleged corruption with the Anti-Corruption Bureau arresting District Commissioner of Mwanza, Jack Ngulube and councillors in Luchenza Municipality on suspicion of mismanagement of public funds among others.<\/p>\n
Kubalasa said 53 years after independence, Malawi remains a classic example of what it means to live a \u201chand to mouth\u201d life due to corruption and fraud.<\/p>\n
Kubalasa said public service delivery has hit a new low due to corruption.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe country has to revisit its national integrity systems and virtues as a matter of urgency if the country is to develop. Malawi\u2019s public finance management system is collapsing because it has weak foundations and the high levels of corruption in the councils are just adding salt on the wounds,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Kubalasa said corruption undermines sustainable development, rule of law and the quality of life of most of the citizens both in rural and urban areas.<\/p>\n
He said it is unfortunate that corruption is escalating in the country not because the stakeholders and the different institutions do not know what they are supposed to do, but purely by choice.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere is need for all the stakeholders to take their responsibilities at all levels to end the vice. Malawi must decisively eradicate corruption and stop glorifying thieves and mediocrity among those holding public offices,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Kubalasa further said the country must utilise its pieces of legislation such as the Corrupt Practices Act; the Public Procurement Act and the Public Audit Act if the country is to develop.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
