{"id":42819,"date":"2017-03-20T09:54:08","date_gmt":"2017-03-20T07:54:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/?p=42819"},"modified":"2017-03-20T09:54:09","modified_gmt":"2017-03-20T07:54:09","slug":"caf-votes-revealed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/index.php\/2017\/03\/20\/caf-votes-revealed\/","title":{"rendered":"Caf votes revealed"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Details have emerged that Football Association of Malawi (Fam) President, Walter Nyamilandu, voted for the newly elected Confederation of African Football (Caf) President, Ahmad Ahmad, during the elections held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia last Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>Ahmad from Madagascar was elected Caf president after accumulating 34 votes against 20, ending the 29-year reign of Cameroonian Issa Hayatou.<\/p>\n<p>Nyamilandu yesterday confirmed his choice for Ahmad.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have not hidden my vote. It is an open secret of which side I was,\u201d Nyamilandu said in a brief response.<\/p>\n<p>After the elections, he described Ahmad\u2019s election as \u201cmission accomplished.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have been marginalised and undermined for a long time. It is time for the wealth to be evenly distributed to member associations. Africa has to catch up with the rest of the world. The gap has been widening with the rest of the world,\u201d said Nyamilandu who has been at the helm of Fam for 12 years.<\/p>\n<p>His choice should not be surprising as Council of Southern Africa Football Association (Cosafa), to which Malawi belongs, through its President, Paul Chiyangwa, openly threw its weight behind Ahmad.<\/p>\n<p>Before the elections, the Zimbabwe Football Association boss Chiyangwa hosted a party in Harare where he invited most football heads, including Fifa President, Gianni Infantino.<\/p>\n<p>However, most East and West African associations voted for the former Caf boss.<\/p>\n<p>The choice of East Africa was not surprising as their umbrella body, the Council for East and Central Africa Football Associations Secretary General, Nicholas Musonye, declared that they would vote as a block for Hayatou.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is a surprise he won by that much but I am not shocked,\u201d <em>Citizen Digital <\/em>website of Kenya quoted a reportedly crestfallen Musonye as saying after the elections.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have been seeing the sequence of events since Monday and it all pointed to what we have witnessed today.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>However, Kenya Football Federation President, Nick Mwendwa, told the same website that he changed his mind and voted for Ahmad after he visited him privately.<\/p>\n<p>The results shocked the world as many people did not expect a new broom to rise to the top of Caf leadership.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Details have emerged that Football Association of Malawi (Fam) President, Walter Nyamilandu, voted for the newly elected Confederation of African Football (Caf) President, Ahmad Ahmad, during the elections held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia last Thursday.
