They have what it takes to be in school but they are financially starved. They are the Floor Steppers.

The group has to compete and win the K2 million at stake in Kajive Season 3 to go back to school.

“We all withdrew from school due to lack of tuition fee. So we are determined to win this time so that we should go back to school,” they said.

Floor Steppers competed in Kajive seasons 1 and 2 but they never got a chance to be crowned winners. What are they to do? Compete until they win the prize money because their lives depend on it.

“Since we can’t go back to school, we use our talent [dance] to get money. We get invited to perform at corporate events and we use the little money we get to buy costume and other basic needs,” the group said.

The group comprises four members: Mike Makawa, who withdrew from college; King Magombo; Tamaka Kapiye, and; Roland Ross. Save for Makawa, the other members hold a Malawi School Certificate of Education.

“Our group started a long time ago. We were brought together by the only talent God blessed us with—dance— despite staying in different townships,” they said.

The group said practice is always a hustle since they do not stay together.

“We struggle when it comes to practise because the two of us stay in Ndirande [Township] and the other two stay in Chilobwe [Township]. As such, transport costs are on the higher side. This is compounded by the fact that we don’t have a practice venue. Things usually get tough when we don’t have money,” they said.

If they are to win in this year’s dance competition they have one plan—to invest the in a business venture.

“We will use the profits we will make to further our studies,” Floor Steppers said.

The group, which had been surviving without a sponsor, recently found one.

“At least we found a sponsor and things have become easier. We are thankful,” the overwhelmed group said.

Floor Steppers said preparations for the grand finale were going well.

“We are giving it our all and we believe we will win. If not then we will definitely compete again until we win,” Floor Steppers said.

The group said they were thankful to Times Group and Airtel for giving them the platform to showcase their talent.

“We are grateful to our sponsors for giving us the platform which can help us go back to school. There are a lot of dancers out there who lack the platform but here we are. Instead of indulging in immoral behaviour, we are always busy, preparing for the competition,” Floor Steppers said.

They are supposed to be in school just like any other youth but they are not.
