The Competition and Fair Trading Commission (CFTC) has cautioned consumers to be alert when using digital devices and platforms while accessing digital business services.<\/p>\n
Speaking on Wednesday during commemoration of International Consumer\u2019s Rights Day, CFTC Executive Director, Wezi Malonda, said the Commission is receiving more complaints that originate from the use of digital platforms.<\/p>\n
Malonda said while the development provides opportunities for traders, it has brought challenges among consumers who are getting substandard products and poor quality services, hence the need to discuss with the consumers their rights and responsibilities.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere are so many commercial activities that are happening through electronic platforms and through the use of digital tools and the consumer is exposed to unfair trading practices.<\/p>\n
\u201cAnd what we are doing is to educate them, provide business clinics and much information so that when their rights are violated, they should know that there is a law to protect them,\u201d she said<\/p>\n
According to Reserve Bank of Malawi reports, over 2.7 million people in the country use digital products.<\/p>\n
The Commission has also warned traders to refrain from engaging in unfair trading practices which adversely disadvantage consumers on the market arguing that the law shall take its course.<\/p>\n
Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Trade and Industry, Cliff Chiunda, said government will ensure that the country enters into international treaties and protocols that guarantee consumer protection.<\/p>\n
Chiunda said, at the moment, there is a strong legal framework that protects consumer rights locally.<\/p>\n
\u201cConsumers are very safe. It is now a question of implementing the consumer policy which we are using in the competition and fair trading in terms of the rights of the consumer and also making sure that there is a fair play on the market,\u201d he said<\/p>\n
Some of the common violations that have been reported to are unwarranted and exploitative charges, supply of defective gadgets and failure to access financial services.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
