{"id":42398,"date":"2017-03-13T10:02:57","date_gmt":"2017-03-13T08:02:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/?p=42398"},"modified":"2017-03-13T10:02:58","modified_gmt":"2017-03-13T08:02:58","slug":"northern-region-water-board-commissions-chitipa-water-supply","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/index.php\/2017\/03\/13\/northern-region-water-board-commissions-chitipa-water-supply\/","title":{"rendered":"Northern Region Water Board commissions Chitipa water supply"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Northern Region Water Board (NRWB) on Friday officially commissioned the Karenge Water Supply Project which is expected to benefit over 30,000 people in Chitipa district<\/p>\n<p>The 21-month project was being financed by the Arab Development Bank (Badea) and the government of Malawi.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking during the inauguration, Traditional Authority Mwenemisuku challenged the Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (Escom) to work on the persistent power outages for the water project to remain meaningful to his subjects.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLike many other places, Chitipa has had historical water problems, this project is a great relief to us. However, it stands to be defeated in the wake of persistent power problems,\u201d Mwenemisuku said.<\/p>\n<p>He added that issues of hygiene and general cleanliness will be easily handled at the district hospital.<\/p>\n<p>Director of Technical services at NRWB, Mwiza Mtawali, in his remarks acknowledged the chief\u2019s concerns and assured the gathering that the board has measures in place to ensure uninterrupted water supply to the people.<\/p>\n<p>Mtawali said: \u201cThe project has made provision of supplementary water tanks which will be operational all the time despite the intermittent power supply.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He then disclosed that the board is also banking on the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) it signed with the people living within the catchment area of Karenge River to ensure sustainability of the project.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are worried with the heavy siltation currently happening with the river because it is weakening the water flow day by day. My appeal to the people here is support the catchment management initiatives that the board is doing here,\u201d Mtawali stressed.<\/p>\n<p>He then disclosed that over 30 kiosks have been built along the pipeline to ensure that every community within the supply zone has access to clean water.<\/p>\n<p>In his remarks, Director of Water Services in the Ministry of Agriculture, Steve Mwanza, who was guest of honour to the event thanked Badea for financing its maiden water project in the country.<\/p>\n<p>He then urged people of Chitipa to demonstrate a sense of responsibility by paying their water bills faithfully and in time.<\/p>\n<p>The NRWB is currently also working on upgrading the water system in Mzuzu, Mzimba and Ekwendeni.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Northern Region Water Board (NRWB) on Friday officially commissioned the Karenge Water Supply Project which is expected to benefit over 30,000 people in Chitipa district The 21-month project was being financed by the Arab Development Bank (Badea) and the government of Malawi.
