Action Aid Malawi has bemoaned inadequate funding towards Early Childhood Development (ECD) and has since requested the government to commit the required 20 percent of the education budget towards those programmes.<\/p>\n
Programme Officer for Action Aid in Phalombe, Rodwell Kanyimbo, said the increased funding will help improve children\u2019s access to ECD facilities and services hence increasing the number of pre-primary classes across the country.<\/p>\n
Kanyimbo made the call on Friday at Mulanje Boma during the graduation ceremony of 50 caregivers from five Community Based Childcare Centres (CBCCs) drawn from Phalombe District.<\/p>\n
\u201cA number of CBCCs across the country are facing enormous challenges like lack of technical, infrastructure development and capacity building. We have to put more effort and government should make sure that it allocates the 20 percent for ECD services. Investment in early childhood is one of the most cost-effective ways of increasing the ability of all children to reach their full potential,\u201d Kanyimbo said.<\/p>\n
He then disclosed that his organisation with funding from the Roger Federer Foundation is supporting ECD services in 10 districts, but he said if funds allow, they will scale up to other districts.<\/p>\n
Phalombe\u2019s Acting District Community Development Officer, Cedric Saukira, admitted that his office has limited resources to support all the 282 CBCCs in the district.<\/p>\n
\u201cFor example, we can\u2019t offer comprehensive training to all caregivers in the district. But I am happy that ActionAid is driving at helping my office to increase the number of trained caregivers which is currently at a staggering 25 percent,\u201d Saukira said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
