{"id":42380,"date":"2017-03-13T09:39:14","date_gmt":"2017-03-13T07:39:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/?p=42380"},"modified":"2017-03-13T09:39:14","modified_gmt":"2017-03-13T07:39:14","slug":"malawi-eyes-major-projects-from-japan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/index.php\/2017\/03\/13\/malawi-eyes-major-projects-from-japan\/","title":{"rendered":"Malawi eyes major projects from Japan"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The outlook for major infrastructural projects for the country is promising with what Japan has already delivered and is yet to deliver for the good of Malawians, Minister of Health Peter Kumpalume has said.<\/p>\n<p>Among the projects on the cards, Lilongwe is expected to have another bypass on the eastern side of the city and a dual carriageway. Others include the construction of Chiromo Bridge in Nsanje and the addition of 21.8 megawatts of electricity to the national grid by expanding Tedzani Hydropower Station.<\/p>\n<p>Already Kamuzu International Airport is undergoing expansion of the terminal building and installation of new equipment from a Japanese grant of $30.4 million.<\/p>\n<p>Kumpalume disclosed the major projects on Thursday night in Lilongwe during the farewell ceremony of Japanese Deputy Ambassador Hisashi Nakatomi and outgoing Chief Representative of Japan International Cooperation Agency (Jica) Kazuhiko Tokuhashi.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Government of Japan has assisted Malawi with a grant amounting to 5.7 billion yen, approximately K20 billion, for the expansion of the Tedzani Electricity Hydropower Station which will enhance our national energy capacity by adding 21.8 megawatts to the national electricity grid,\u201d said Kumpalume at the Japanese Ambassador\u2019s residence.<\/p>\n<p>Kumpalume said Malawi is also looking for financial aid from Japan\u2019s $33 billion financial package for Africa. This was announced by Japan at the Sixth Tokyo International Conference on African Development that was held in Kenya in August 2016. The package is for three areas for economic development, building resilient health systems and social stability.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMalawi looks forward with hope that the country will benefit enormously from these projects.
