The Minister of Natural Resources, Energy and Mining, Bright Msaka, has directed Energy Company of Malawi (Egenco) to deal with siltation of the ponds at Tedzani Power Station.<\/p>\n
The directive comes at a time when Malawi continues to face power outages, a development which is affecting both public and private sectors, including households.<\/p>\n
Msaka said this when he toured the power station on Friday as part of a familiarisation tour since the establishment of the company on January 1 2017.<\/p>\n
He said the company should deal with siltation so that ponds are deep to be able to generate more power for use in homes, companies and various offices.<\/p>\n
\u201cDraining of siltation should take place because the country needs power. The same should also happen at Nkula and Kapichira power stations,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Msaka stated that the company should not just let nature control the system but rather deal with siltation of the ponds.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf all the machines work normally, the issue of blackouts will be history. At the same time, it is also important for Egenco to take a lead in the generation of power through solar and other means,\u201d Msaka said.<\/p>\n
But Egenco officials said works to deal with the challenge will start once the needed materials are procured following public procurement procedures.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt is about procurement of the necessary materials though public procurement process. We are on track and we will sort out the problem,\u201d said one of the officials.<\/p>\n
Close to K4 billion has been set aside for the company to deal with siltation at Tedzani Power Station.<\/p>\n
Recently, Egenco said rehabilitation works of Nkula A Power Station are set to start in June following news that a team has been put in place to develop and implement mitigation measures.<\/p>\n
The rehabilitation works will be conducted under the $350 million Millennium Challenge Compact (MCC), which was signed between Malawi and the United States governments.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
