The experts also attended to some patients at Kamuzu Central Hospital (KCH).<\/p>\n<p>The three specialists\u2014 Gireesh Siddaiah, a kidney specialist; endocrinologist Suryan Arayana and cardiologist Ashok Kumar\u2014said they attended to over 70 patients each at KCH and Care Poly Clinic during the three days they were in the country.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMalawi has a high rate of diabetes and hypertension leading to kidney problems and heart problems. These disease are so common. People need to change certain lifestyle habits. Avoid too much fat. Avoid accumulating fat. Eat a balanced died. Try to maintain ideal body weight,\u201d said Kumar on behalf of the team.<\/p>\n<p>Kumar said during their visit, they gave health education and treatment to patients at the two health facilities and added that many of those that turned up had diabetes, cardiac and hypertension challenges.<\/p>\n<p>The doctors have since left the country. Managing Director of Care Poly Clinic Anjana Sivakumar said she decided to bring the experts to her clinic because most of the patients needed expert treatment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome patients had heart problems, diabetes complications, kidney and cardiac problems and it was easier to bring the medical doctors into the country to give treatment. The patients expressed satisfaction as they said they were happy with the diagnosis,\u201d said Sivakumar.<\/p>\n<p>Of late some deaths have been reported due to kidney failure and Malawi\u2019s major referral hospital, Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital, is failing to attend to all diabetic patients due to rigorous procedures.<\/p>\n<p>Diabetes mellitus is a chronic disease which occurs when the pancreas produces insufficient insulin, or when the body cannot effectively use the available insulin.<\/p>\n<p>The prevalence of diabetes in Malawi is 5.6 percent among adults aged between 25 and 64 years.<\/p>\n<p>The risk factors include sedentary lifestyle and the aging population and also the relationship with HIV and Aids which has been implicated to increase the risk of diabetes according to Malawi Medical Journal of Medical Association of Malawi.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>VISITING Indian medical doctors have warned Malawians to change their habits to avoid non-communicable diseases such as diabetes, hypertension and kidney failure.
