INTERNATIONAL human rights body Amnesty International has called upon authorities in Malawi to step up efforts to protect people with albinism who are being targeted for rituals. The call follows an attack on<\/p>\n
The call follows an attack on former president of the Association of the People with Albinism, Gilbert Daire, in Blantyre on Thursday. In a statement released on Friday, the human rights body said the resurgence of the attacks sends a chilling message about lack of protection, safety and security for people with albinism.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis brazen attack happened in the middle of the country\u2019s busiest city, and sends a chilling message about the lack protection, safety and security of all people with albinism,\u201d said Deprose Muchena, Amnesty International\u2019s Regional Director for Southern Africa. Since the beginning of 2017, two people with albinism have been murdered while three others have survived clearly targeted attacks, including two stabbings. Muchena said authorities in the country must end this cycle of impunity of perpetrators of these crimes.<\/p>\n

\ndozens of individuals being hunted down like animals for their body parts, but these brazen attacks seem to continue unabated. People with albinism in Malawi have come under increased risk of being abducted or killed for rituals since November 2014. In the statement UN Resident Representative Mia Seppo has called upon authorities and other stakeholders to redouble efforts to prevent attacks, protect persons with albinism, provide assistance to victims and bring perpetrators to justice. Among others, Seppo has encouraged authorities to move forward as a matter of priority with legislation regulating the work of traditional healers in the country.<\/p>\n
