Mussa looked regal and one could easily think this was a man who had just saved a nation’s soul and deserved all the attention and royal treatment.

It would be shocking for many to learn that Mussa is just one former minister who decided to hand himself over to the Anti Corruption Bureau (ACB) after learning that he was being investigated for some alleged wrongdoing when he was minister of home affairs.

In a country like ours where everything—be it theft, lechery, corruption—is glorified, Mussa will be thought to be a good citizen who did the right thing to hand himself over. I leave that to you. But there is a bigger story to that than that sham parade of inviting some purported well-wishers to accompany him to ACB to hand himself over.

If you read previous publications or revelations on why Uladi Mussa is being haunted and hounded by the ACB, then you would not have any sympathy for the guy. Mussa, in his very words, conceded that he directed officials at the Immigration Department to warrant citizenship to some foreigners.

His excuse was so shallow if not repulsive. According to his earlier testimony, Mussa said he proceeded appending his signature to documents which he had not even gone through. It was just like that comic Mr Shouter Shout-out Officer on a promo on GOtv reclining on his swivel chair and signing to whatever comes in the in-tray. Whether Mussa decided to warrant citizenship to those foreigners after being palm greased or inadvertently as he wants us to believe, it is something we will talk about later. My take is

Whether Mussa decided to warrant citizenship to those foreigners after being palm greased or inadvertently as he wants us to believe, it is something we will talk about later. My take is that, by conceding that Mussa “just did what he was asked to as minister” tells a lot about the people we entrust to run our affairs. The Ministry of Home Affairs is one that touches on the security of this country and having on top of it a man who carelessly signs for documents which he did not only bother to read is an unpardonable transgression. Now, Mussa—Uladi if you like—reminds us that as a country, we have fraudsters governing us. Here, I am talking about people who think governing this nation is just a circus where they can pull some pranks and get away. I am talking about people who would chant hoarse in praise and defence of wrong doing as long as at the end of the day they are rewarded for what they call loyalty: I call it idiocy. For the umpteenth time, I have an urge to tell everyone who caes that the reason this country is still stuck in the quagmire of underdevelopment is that we are too timid to call a spade by its name. For instance, Uladi Mussa should not have had the guts to stare at us to tell us that his being pursued by the ACB was nothing but some political machinations. In 2013 or slightly before that, President Peter Mutharika and his gang called Midnight Six.

For instance, Uladi Mussa should not have had the guts to stare at us to tell us that his being pursued by the ACB was nothing but some political machinations. In 2013 or slightly before that, President Peter Mutharika and his gang called Midnight Six were
arrested for their attempt to rape the constitution and usurp power when Bingu wa Mutharika died. For many, Peter’s arrest was also just a political move to kill his political dream but to me, it was just the law taking its course. But because in our good country the law is always politically connected, we decide to take issues politically. I have a serious case in mind.

The scandalous maize deal between Malawi and Zambia is a fine example of this nation’s rottenness. Just like in the case of Uladi Mussa who claimed to have signed documents without properly reading them, we also have officials at the Office of the Directorate of Public Procurement and the Treasury who claim to have rushed into

Just like in the case of Uladi Mussa who claimed to have signed documents without properly reading them, we also have officials at the Office of the Directorate of Public Procurement and the Treasury who claim to have rushed into authorising the maize deal. By the end of the day, the revelations coming out of these rushed processes are that we have careless people at the top who operate as if they are in a trance: if not then they must be people who make rush decisions crookedly.

I always tell people that some people in this country unnecessarily expend they energy trying to bring sobriety to this nation. Lets us accept that we care little about this nation. I can even presume that most of you reading this are surprised that the epigram on this column is one of the verses of our national anthem.
