Organisations and experts working on conserving the environment have planned to undertake a cleaning exercise in Chembe village and the Lake Malawi National Park in Cape Maclear, Mangochi.<\/p>\n
The move, according to the organisers, is aimed at stepping up the conservation of the lake which is feared to be losing its water levels and facing pollution due to various human activities.<\/p>\n
Founding trustee of the Health Education Environment and Economic Development (Heeed), Alison Wiklund said the situation at Cape Maclear is becoming worrisome as people are throwing waste in the lake.<\/p>\n
The development, she said, is contaminating the shores thereby posing a health risk to the people as well as affecting tourism.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere is garbage thrown in the lake that is leading to the contamination of the lake shores a situation which is unhealthy. There is also, under lake, pollution which we need to tackle; it is like people have stopped taking responsibility of their environment. Chembe Village is facing pollution and so is the Lake Malawi National Park, we want to change the mindset of the 17 000 people in this Cape Maclear area to change the trend,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
Chembe Village in Mangochi is located close to the shores of Lake Malawi in the tourist\u2019s attraction place of Cape Maclear. The place receives many tourists because of the lake.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, the experts have resolved to carry a cleaning exercise in the area from March 20 to 22 to leave a mark for the people to keep conserving the area.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
