The charity committee of St Montfort Parish of the Catholic Church at Catholic Institute in Blantyre has donated 250 bags of maize flour and 20 kilogrammes of soya pieces to people affected by hunger in the district.<\/p>\n
The committee donated the food items to people in Chimuwanga, Pensulo and Jumbe villages of Traditional Authority Somba.<\/p>\n
Presenting the donation, Chairperson of the committee, Kenneth Mthuzi, said the donation is part of the church\u2019s response to calls for immediate assistance to people affected by hunger.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe Parish Council, which visited the area and established that the people there are in need of food aid, recommended that we should reach out to the affected people,\u201d Mthuzi said.<\/p>\n
Mthunzi said the parish spends five percent of its total collections on charity.<\/p>\n
He said the parish works in areas of education, health, prison ministry and food security.<\/p>\n
Mthunzi said the donation will cushion the people from hunger and help them spare the green maize until harvest.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe presented the items irrespective of beneficiaries\u2019 religious affiliation,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
One of the beneficiaries, Itness Matiyasi, hailed the church for the support.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe items will help my family because we will have enough food until the harvesting season. We appeal to other well-wishers to come forward because prolonged dry spells and armyworms have affected our chances of harvesting enough food,\u201d Matiyasi said.<\/p>\n
