Opposition People\u2019s Party (PP) has cancelled plans to hold its convention this year. The party\u2019s constitution stipulates that the National Governing Council (NGC) should call for an indaba every five years.<\/p>\n
The withdrawal comes after acting president Uladi Mussa told the media last month that the party would hold the convention where all positions will be up for grabs.<\/p>\n
However, yesterday Mussa said the party will not hold the indaba this year.<\/p>\n
PP last held its convention in 2013, when Joyce Banda was elected to represent the party in the 2014 elections.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe constitution guides us to hold the convention this year. But let me clarify that there will not be a convention as said. We are indeed a democratic party that upholds its constitution but we cannot afford holding the convention this year,\u201d Mussa said without disclosing the reasons behind the sudden change.<\/p>\n
However, one of the NGC members, who opted for anonymity, said the party has called for an NGC members\u2019 meeting today where, among other things, they will set a date for the convention.<\/p>\n
The source said the party is undecided on how to handle the two camps that exist in the Northern Region.<\/p>\n
Some party leaders in the Northern Region are behind former vice president Khumbo Kachali, whose name was proposed to be one of the interim leaders before the party\u2019s President Joyce Banda appointed Mussa.<\/p>\n
However, Mussa denied the existence of another camp, arguing PP is one.<\/p>\n
