A group of opposition Malawi Congress Party (MCP) youths calling themselves Friends of Chakwera has called on Malawians to reach out to the needy this time when a lot of people are still in need of food assistance.<\/p>\n
On Sunday, the group from Lilongwe\u2019s City Centre Constituency planted trees at Chipala Primary School in Area 50 and donated food items to the needy.<\/p>\n
The area is one of the perfect symbols of urban poverty and most of its land is bare such that erosion and runoffs are difficult to control.<\/p>\n
The MCP youth said they undertook the two activities because they feel they have a role to play in the development of the country and in caring for the less privileged.<\/p>\n
The party\u2019s Central Region deputy chairman, Joe Ching\u2019ani, who was Guest of Honour at the event, bemoaned what he called the habit of hiding behind democracy when pillaging the environment without replenishing it.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt is very pathetic these days that people don\u2019t care about conserving the environment. You find someone cutting trees carelessly and they say it is their right; what kind of right is this? Democracy should not be misinterpreted to such levels,\u201d said Ching\u2019ani.<\/p>\n
Regarding the donation by the MCP youth, Ching\u2019ani said the party always believes in extending a hand to the needy.<\/p>\n
One of the beneficiaries of the donation, Tressy Mpizi, said the gesture had come at the right time as she is struggling to feed her family daily.<\/p>\n
\u201cThat is how God works. Who knew I would be one of the people to receive this flour? I am grateful to these young men and women and of course their leader, Lazarus Chakwera,\u201d Mpizi said.<\/p>\n
