Barely three days after armed robbers shot dead a police officer in broad daylight in Lilongwe, the law enforcers on Friday afternoon shot dead four suspected criminals at PUMA Filling Station in Kanengo.<\/p>\n
Eye witnesses told Malawi News that plain clothed police officers opened fire at the suspects who were in a vehicle Toyota Raum registration number KA 4089, after the vehicle had parked some few metres from the fuel service station.<\/p>\n
A visit to the scene of the incident by Malawi News crew found the law enforcers still manning the vehicle which was in a pool of blood inside and more than 10 bullets holes outside.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt was quite scary and everyone had to lie down soon after the first shot was fired. It took about three minutes then it was all quiet. The officers rushed to the vehicle and I saw four lifeless bodies being taken out of the vehicle and they were just thrown on the ground,\u201d said an eye witness.<\/p>\n
Another witness said,\u201d The police came well prepared because they did not waste time; they started shooting right from the road while approaching the car. I saw one person who was seating on the driver\u2019s seat and he jumped out and started running but he was gunned down.\u201d<\/p>\n
When contacted for comment, Central Region Police Spokesperson, Ramsy Mushani, while confirming that the police were first to fire said it could not be a case of mistaken identity.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe had intelligence information that the people planned to commit a crime. We followed that and indeed when we arrived<\/p>\n
at the place, the people were gathered as per their plans. Four have been shot dead. We have also recovered a gun and live ammunitions. Full details will be provided later,\u201d said Mushani.<\/p>\n
Following the shooting of the police officers earlier this week, Police Inspector General, Lexten Kachama, told the media at a press briefing that the law enforcers are not considering reintroducing the shoot \u2013to \u2013 kill strategy in dealing with armed criminals.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
