Fire on Sunday morning destroyed a house of High Court Judge, Charles Mkandawire, in Lilongwe\u2019s Area 43 residential area.<\/p>\n
The fire, which is said to have started around 7:30 in the morning, destroyed the house and property that was in it.<\/p>\n
According to Justice Mkandawire, it started when he was at Church.<\/p>\n
\u201cMy daughter who was in the house with a little child, just discovered that she was engulfed in smoke. Fortunately, she rushed to a room where the baby was sleeping and managed to get out of the house with her,\u201d Mkandawire said.<\/p>\n
When The Daily Times <\/em>crew visited the place, it was noted that the house was extensively damaged. And Mkandawire said his property was also destroyed, although they managed to rescue some.<\/p>\n The judge suspects the inferno was caused by a power surge.<\/p>\n \u201cI had to gather facts from the people who were here at the time of the incident. I have been told that the lights were switching on and off before the smoke was noticed. This side of Area 43, we have been having power problems. Recently, one of my neighbours\u2019 house caught fire in similar circumstances,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n Justice Mkandawire said the incident has happened after Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (Escom) has just replaced a transformer in the area.<\/p>\n In December, a house of former budget director, Paul Mphwiyo, who lives a few metres from Mkandawire\u2019s house, also caught fire. It was suspected that the cause was an electrical fault.<\/p>\n Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs, Samuel Tembenu, who visited Mkandawire\u2019s residence accompanied by Chief Justice, Andrew Nyirenda, said he was sad with the development.<\/p>\n \u201cYou have a judge who needs to be operating from a home. But when these things happen, it is bad. I am sad.
