Malawi\u2019s representatives at the 2017 International Association of Athletics Federations (Iaaf) World Cross- Country Championship were identified over the weekend.<\/p>\n
The athletes were identified during the National Cross- Country Championship at Dedza Golf Club on Saturday.<\/p>\n
Champions in four categories will automatically represent Malawi at the world event slated for March 27 in Kampala, Uganda.<\/p>\n
Malawi will send seven athletes to the championship.<\/p>\n
Promising athlete Kefasi Kasten will make it to Uganda after winning the men\u2019s seniors\u2019 10-kilometre race in 31 minutes 53 seconds.<\/p>\n
Runner-up Chancy Master clocked 31 minutes 58 seconds.<\/p>\n
Harry Sichali finished on third place in 32 minutes followed by Grevazio Mpani in 32 minutes 11 seconds.<\/p>\n
In the women\u2019s seniors\u2019 category, Malita Phiri won the championship after clocking 37 minutes 50 seconds whereas Muneyi Chingayipe came second in 39 minutes 31 seconds.<\/p>\n
In the boys\u2019 category, Bezulo Mike emerged the champion after finishing the eight-kilometre race in 26 minutes 38 seconds followed by Wilson Juma\u2019s 27 minutes 18 seconds.<\/p>\n
Cecilia Mhango won the girls\u2019 category followed by Mercy Malembo and Doteya Phupha in second and third positions, respectively.<\/p>\n
Athletic Association of Malawi (AAM) General Secretary, Frank Chitembeya, said he was hopeful that the athletes would win medals in Uganda.<\/p>\n
\u201cAs an association, we will make sure that all the athletes receive enough support to prepare thoroughly for the tournament. We have identified the cream of athletes and we hope that they will not disappoint us,\u201d Chitembeya said.<\/p>\n
