The institution started its operations in Malawi when it opened its doors in Dedza in 1987, initially targeting populations fleeing the armed conflict in Mozambique.

BLM Country Manager, Nicky Matthews, said she is proud of the impact her organisation has had in Malawi for the past 30 years.

“Since we started working in Malawi, there has been an increase in the number of women accessing contraception services. We are glad that we have contributed a lot towards this,” Mathews said.

She was speaking in Lilongwe on Tuesday during a press briefing marking the organisation’s 30 years of service provision in the country.

According to Matthews, greater access to contraceptive education and services could save lives of thousands of women and teenage girls, as well as giving them the chance to finish their education.

“BLM is committed to continuing to provide sexual reproductive health services in Malawi. We are incredibly grateful to the Ministry of Health and all of our funding partners that enable us to provide life-saving services across the country,” she said.

According to a media advisory from the organisation, which is largely synonymous with family planning, BLM provides up to 60 percent of modern contraception methods nationwide and provides 85 percent of its services in the country through over 600 mobile outreach sites.

Meanwhile, the institution has disclosed that as part of celebrating the 30th anniversary, it will provide all modern contraception counselling and services, including Post-Abortion Care, in all 29 centres at no cost from February 7 to 8 May this year.

One of the country’s reproductive health services providers, Banja La Mtsogolo (BLM), has warned that unchecked population growth will increase pressure on strained resources in the country.
