Officer-in-charge (OC) for Nkhotakota Prison, Peter Nsini, has lamented that shortage of food and space has hit hard the prison and called on the corporate world and other well-wishers to assist.<\/p>\n
Nsini said the prison requires over K7 million per month to meet food requirements for the ever increasing number of prisoners but only gets K3 million from the government.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe require six bags of maize and a bag of beans to feed the prisoners in a day but due to economic challenges the country is going through, we only get funding of K3 million for the whole month which is not enough. Sometimes I am forced to use my own bags of maize to feed these people,\u201d Nsini said.<\/p>\n
He also said congestion, which is a common problem in the country\u2019s prisons, has not spared the institution as the prison has 520 prisoners against limited space.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis only signifies that crime rate is also increasing out there which is not good. I therefore take this opportunity to ask our elected duty bearers to consider constructing a block to control congestion,\u201d Nsini said.<\/p>\n
The OC said this on Tuesday when a grouping of women of Malawi Broadcasting Corporation\u2019s Zokonda Amayi Programme, donated assorted items to the prison.<\/p>\n
Chairperson of the group, Chrissy Maganga, said they felt obliged to assist the prisoners.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are engaged in so many charitable works so we felt that we should come and share the little we have with our friends here,\u201d Maganga said.<\/p>\n
Receiving the donation, Nsini said the items that included bags of maize flour, soap, salt, soya pieces, plastic plates will compliment with the little they have in stock in making sure that the prisoners have food on daily basis.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
