One way is to let him go as a free agent, while we agree on some conditions like that they should just give us something.”

Free agents can sign for any suitor outside the transfer window. Such players sign for free and earn signing-on fees.

Lipipa faulted an unnamed go-between for spoiling the transfer.

“We discovered at the last minute that there was an agent who wanted to pocket more than our club from the deal,” Lipipa said.

“Initially, we got communication that Highlanders wanted to pay less than K5 million on the star, but after some negotiations, it was raised to K5 million, then K10 million.”

Lipipa added that they were eventually surprised to discover that the agent had agreed with Highlanders a transfer fee of K28 million for the defender.

The name of former Bullets’ defender, Patrick Mabedi, has been mentioned in the botched up transfer deal, but it is unclear if he is the so-called agent, who Lipipa is referring to.

Agents are those that are certified. Mabedi is a mere coach.

“It is not true that an agent should benefit more than a team or the player himself. That is being greedy. We spend a lot of money to build such young players up to the level that some teams should require their services,” Lipipa said.

Gabeya, who had initially flopped in his trials at another PSL team, Kaizer Chiefs, eventually made it at Highlands last week.

However, the sweeper returned home after talks between his current employers, Bullets and Highlands flopped on January 31, 2017 transfer deadline.

It was a fresh setback for the former Malawi Under-20 National Football Team sweeper who also previously had unsuccessful trials with other PSL sides, Chippa United and Bloemfontein Celtic recently.

A week after failing to clinch a deal with Highlands Park, there is a flicker of hope for Flames’ defender, Miracle Gabeya, to sign for the South Africa Absa Premier Soccer League (PSL) side.
