The Malawi Economic Justice Network (Mejn) has advised the Budget and Finance Committee of Parliament to scrutinise public expenditure by summoning institutions that are given public money.<\/p>\n
Mejn Executive Director, Dalitso Kubalasa, has appealed to the committee to seriously review the expenditure over the past six months before adopting the 2016\/2017 midyear budget review arguing the first half of the 2016\/2017 budget had some loopholes.<\/p>\n
He made the remarks in Lilongwe when Mejn was meeting the Budget and Finance Committee of Parliament.<\/p>\n
Kubalasa said it is sad that government departments continue plundering resources denying Malawians social services.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe national integrity system at the national level is not really thriving as it should and the symptom of that are service delivery being constrained and the revenue side of the budget is not really working as it should and the expenditure side of the budget is not really working,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Kubalasa further said the legislators should make reflections on the budget and scrutinise how the country could do better.<\/p>\n
\u201cAs the committees and the entire members of Parliament will be going into the midyear budget review, we are requesting them to go into the House with those serious reflections in mind and look at the things as a whole new thing not just like the usual,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Mejn conducted a public expenditure tracking survey in Dowa, Mulanje and Zomba and, among others, the study established that the country\u2019s economy is in shambles.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Minister of Finance Goodall Gondwe has disclosed that as Parliament starts meeting next week, chances are high that some budget lines will be revised downwards because of continued withdrawal of budgetary support by donors.<\/p>\n
Government is currently implementing a K1.149 trillion budget which Parliament approved on June 30 last year.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
