Heavy rains falling in Mzimba District have washed away Manoro Bridge over South Rukuru River, cutting off communities in Malidade and Manoro trading centres.<\/p>\n
The development compelled M\u2019mbelwa District Council to use about K500,000 from the Constituency Development Fund for Mzimba West to procure a boat for use as government is mobilising resources to repair the bridge.<\/p>\n
The boat was presented over the weekend to Village Headman Munyanjagha Botha for use by surrounding communities.<\/p>\n
Mzimba District Commissioner, Thomas Chirwa, said the boat was bought from a businessman in Nkhata Bay after efforts to borrow one from other institutions in the lakeshore district proved futile.<\/p>\n
\u201cManoro Bridge is very important to the area. Learners use it as they go and come back from school. The same applies to businessmen and those going to hospitals. So it was important for us to source the boat to help people of the area to continue to access various amenities,\u201d Chirwa said.<\/p>\n
He said officials from the Roads Authority inspected the area and promised to construct another bridge once water levels in the river go down.<\/p>\n
Chirwa was accompanied by Mzimba West Member of Parliament, Harry Mkandawire, who said his constituents needed the boat to continue accessing various needs.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe area has schools like Malidade CDSS whose learners used the bridge from time to time. The learners had stopped going to school after the bridge was washed away. That is why we thought of buying the boat,\u201d Mkandawire said.<\/p>\n
Village Headman Mnyanjagha Botha thanked the council and Mkandawire for the purchase of the boat, saying it will alleviate the problems faced by surrounding communities who could not cross the river to access various needs.<\/p>\n
A boat peddler from Nkhata Bay has been deployed to the area to train villagers in how to use the boat safely.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
