The British High Commissioner to Malawi Holly Tett has said her first assignment in the country will be to help Malawi achieve economic independence.<\/p>\n
Tett said in the few days she has been in the country, she has learnt how to help Malawi stand on its feet in terms of providing all the basic necessities to the citizenry.<\/p>\n
Tett was speaking on Thursday in Chikwawa when she visited three hunger resilience projects that are funded by the British Government.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are one of the countries responding to the food insecurity situation in Malawi. We are providing humanitarian response to people who need it through the provision of health clinics and the food distribution programmes that are run by our partner organisations like the World Food Programme and the Christian Aid.<\/p>\n
In the time I will be here, my focus will be to help Malawi break the cycle of humanitarian need. We need to move Malawi to be a less dependent nation,\u201d Tett said.<\/p>\n
She also said that during her time at the helm, she will make sure that Malawians are not adversely affected by climate change.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are running a resilience programme to a tune of \u00a330 million and already invest \u00a3150 million (approximately K150 billion) annually to development programmes in Malawi that are aimed at lifting people\u2019s lives out of poverty,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
Country Representative of the World Food Programme Coco Ushiyama said the humanitarian response by the international bodies has been overwhelming.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn November, we were talking of the $35 million shortfall towards disaster response but now that has been reduced to around $15 million, as such we have been able to roll out the food distribution exercises to all the affected people. We are doing this with the government [of Malawi] and the support we are receiving has been overwhelming,\u201d Ushiyama said.<\/p>\n
About 367, 000 people in Chikwawa are receiving relief food items such as maize, pigeon peas and cooking oil among others, according to Chikwawa District Commissioner, Fred Movete.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
