The Lilongwe City Council has said it will put in place measures that will assist in taking children out of the city\u2019s streets.<\/p>\n
The council\u2019s Deputy Mayor, Juliana Kaduya said the goal of moving children from the streets can be achieved if there is a multi-sectoral approach.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere is need to make sure that children taken out of streets are taught different skills. It is therefore important that special programmes should be initiated for the youth so that they become productive citizens. Teaching the children computer skills is one of them,\u201d Kaduya said.<\/p>\n
He was speaking in Lilongwe when he visited Chisomo Children\u2019s Computer laboratory. The computers and accessories, whose value is \u00a348,000 (about K44 million) have been donated to Chisomo Children Club by Barclays through Retrak UK.<\/p>\n
Retrak UK Public Fundraising Manager, Laura Ambler, said positive steps have been made in making sure that children are taken off the streets.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe programmes we have been doing are having a massive impact. Through the resources and knowledge being imparted, levels of excellence are being raised. The number of children being reintegrated in society is going up,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
Chisomo Children Club Executive Director, Charles Gwengwe, said involvement of all stakeholders will help in clearing children from the streets.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt is important to work together on this issue. All people who matter have to be taken on board. For example, involvement of councillors and block leaders will help a lot in reintegration of children,\u201d Gwengwe said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
