The Human Rights Consultative Committee (HRCC) has appealed to the Germany Government through its Ambassador to Malawi to cancel a visa that was given to suspended Minister of Agriculture, Irrigation and Water Development George Chaponda, arguing that giving the Agriculture Minister visa permit shows Germany is breaking the country\u2019s laws.<\/p>\n
According to a statement released on Monday, HRCC says it has learnt with shock that Chaponda, who is also a lawyer by profession, has travelled to Germany in his capacity as Minister of Agriculture.<\/p>\n
The statement signed by HRCC Chairperson Robert Mkwezalamba criticises the Germany Government for failing to respect Malawi\u2019s courts.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are calling upon the Germany Government to cancel George Chaponda\u2019s visa for their country as this not only shows their willingness to break our laws but exposes their nation with regards to how it respects or doesn\u2019t respect institutions of justice pronouncements,\u201d reads the statement.<\/p>\n
In the statement, HRCC has since called on President Peter Mutharika to immediately recall the Minister from the trip and dismiss him from cabinet.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are calling upon President Peter Mutharika, a constitutional lawyer to immediately recall the Minister from the trip and fire him from Cabinet for this embarrassment which has brought his government and leadership into disrepute,\u201d further reads the statement.<\/p>\n
HRCC further calls on Malawians to condemn the action of the Minister and to ensure that the rule of the law remains respected.<\/p>\n
