President Peter Mutharika says he expects the country\u2019s cost of borrowing to decline by next year as inflation continues to soften.<\/p>\n
Mutharika said this in Lilongwe yesterday in a statement broadcast on MBC radio and television on the achievements of the Democratic Progressive Party\u2019s administration in the one year it has been in power.<\/p>\n
Currently, Malawi\u2019s base lending rates by commercial banks averages 38 percent, a development which means borrowers have to cough over 40 percent when banks add up other fees such as risks.<\/p>\n
Mutharika said in the past 12 months, inflation has declined to 18.3 percent from 24.2 percent in November 2014 largely due to the relative strengthening of the Malawi kwacha supported by declining pump prices of fuel.<\/p>\n
The president said he expects annual inflation to fall to 16.5 percent in 2015 from 23.8 percent in 2014.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe decline in inflation is expected to increase people\u2019s disposable incomes and interest rates are also expected to decline in 2016,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Mutharika said the Malawi economy has enjoyed positive growth despite the challenges faced this year as a result of floods and<\/p>\n
dry spells that affected agricultural production.<\/p>\n
He estimated the economy to have grown by 5.5 percent and expects it to rebound to higher levels averaging 7 percent from next year.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
