The body of veteran journalist, Frank Gondwe, was yesterday laid to rest at Stella Maris Cemetery in Blantyre.<\/p>\n
Gondwe died on Tuesday after a long battle with diabetes.<\/p>\n
It was a melancholic atmosphere as hundreds of people flocked to the cemetery to bid farewell to a man they revered and formally called \u201cThe old Man\u201d.<\/p>\n
Former workmates, friends and family had no other words for Gondwe other than recalling the positive influence he has had on their lives.<\/p>\n
Macdonald Chapalapata, who worked with Gondwe at Times Group, described the fallen journalist as professional, competent and a humble editor who easily interacted with old and young people alike.<\/p>\n
\u201cI was shocked to hear of his death. He was a competent editor, a great person and I learnt a lot from him. He knew his work and the English language well,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
The late Gondwe was a pillar to the media fraternity as he was to his family.<\/p>\n
Dan Gondwe a brother to the late Gondwe, said the family has lost a role model and a source of inspiration.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is great loss to our family. We all looked up to him for inspiration. As a family, we will greatly miss him,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Until his retirement last year, Gondwe worked as a Proof Reader for Times Group. Before that, he once served as a Sub Editor for The Daily Times. <\/em><\/p>\n He joined Times Media Group on September 9, 1980, retired on June 30, 2000 and then rejoined the group on August, 23 2006.<\/p>\n He hailed from Chiwale Nchenachena Village, Traditional Authority Chikulamayembe in Rumphi District.<\/p>\n Gondwe, who was born on May, 21, 1945, is survived by a wife and two children.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" The body of veteran journalist, Frank Gondwe, was yesterday laid to rest at Stella Maris Cemetery in Blantyre.
